Causeway Bae review

At the corner in JSEC that is known to serve Chinese food for the past couple of years, comes Causeway Bae, a stall run by a team of juniors with the goal to provide comfort food for Ateneans with a taste for the familiar flavors of the Orient.

Taste

The Chicken Chops do what they promise: A fusion of two textures in every bite with crispy breading and a tender slice of white chicken. Its juice seeps through the breading, enough for the flavor to encapsulate the bite. However, the breading-to-chicken ratio is a bit overproportional.

Meanwhile, lemon sauce generously dress the chicken tenders and bring out a tangy yet sweet impression in the chicken’s savory nature. The Spare Ribs, on the other hand, have a fair mix of seasonings just enough to create the right amount of spiciness.

The Fried Mantou, drizzled in condensed milk, is the meal’s cherry on top. One bite in, and you’re taken into a fluffy delight of what appears to be a Cantonese version of a doughnut, with minimal air holes inside.

Concept

Causeway Bae is wordplay for Causeway Bay, a go-to street in Hong Kong where locals go to eat and hang out. According to the owners, they want their customers to see food as “everyone’s number one bae.” This is definitely experienced in each of their dishes that are good enough to satisfy anyone’s hungry heart.

Value for money

A combo meal allows one to indulge in a full meal from appetizers to desserts. For Php 120-130, you get two pieces of siomai or dumplings, rice, a viand of your choice, mantou, and a cup of iced tea or a bottle of water. The meal is satisfying from beginning to end, with no need to buy more.

Final Verdict

With comfort and satisfaction found in all choices, your “bae” could be any of these dishes. Causeway Bae’s mission is complete.
