Curry Up review

Tucked in a small corner of JSEC, Curry Up is a pocketful of surprises and flavors. Though it may be overlooked because of its location, this stall is one that everyone should look out for.

Taste

With just the first bite, their Curry Rice with Pork Tonkatsu is definitely a dish to look out for. The well-seasoned pork cutlet is pounded so that it is tender, before it is breaded with flour, egg, and Japanese breadcrumbs. The appetizingly golden brown hue and crunchy exterior of the pork cutlet provide a contrast to the soft and fluffy rice it is served with, giving the dish texture to accompany its strong flavors.

The curry sauce is a thick and dulcified version of the usual spicy Japanese curry. The sauce has been adapted into a sweet-blend, so that those without a high tolerance for spice may enjoy the flavorful dish. For those who prefer a little kick, the stall also gives you the option to add chili powder to your dish. Pair this with any of the three side dishes that they have: Cabbage with sesame dressing, carrots and potatoes, or a fried egg. Curry Up will no doubt leave you full and content.

Concept

Curry-based dishes are a tried and true concept in JSEC. It’s been done before. What hasn’t been done before, however, is a stall that serves Japanese curry which remains true to its roots. Curry Up uses Japanese spices such as hondashi, but at the same time, adapts its dishes to the taste of the usual Filipino by forgoing the usual spiciness and taking on a sweeter taste.

Value for money

Each dish is served with one whole pork cutlet, and it isn’t one of those lousy meats, mind you. Curry Up’s pork cutlets are thick yet tender, and the curry is layered generously, complementing the meat, but not too much as to overpower it.

Final verdict

Curry Up is a stall that anyone would want to visit again. With their distinct taste, concept, and hearty portions, the taste of curry is now made accessible to Ateneans.
