Cyprus review

Some think that the key to standing out in JSEC is to go big and bold with the theme and food options. Although Cyprus may not be the first stall that your eye catches on your way in, it is one that’s worth a second look (and taste).

Taste

The main offerings of this Mediterranean-themed restaurant include the classic lunch favorites, chicken and beef, and some rare finds in JSEC, shrimp and squid. Texture-wise, the chicken and beef are perfectly tender while the shrimp and squid are firm. Seasoned only with salt and pepper, these dishes, particularly the seafood options, don’t really have the kick one looks for, but there is still the savory flavor that you can expect from a grilled dish.

The sides are the carriers of flavors on the plate. The pita is soft, but can still carry the creaminess of the hummus. The turmeric rice is already sweet on its own, but once the fresh tomatoes and onions are tossed in and the garlic yoghurt and marinara sauces are spread on top, you won’t ever see rice the same way again. Cyprus also offers a sweet Snickerdoodle cookie that is soft on the inside and brushed with cinnamon on the outside.

Concept

With fried foods occupying most of JSEC every year, the decision to go grilled seems pretty bold. The risk, however, pays off for Cyprus because the flavorful sides and seasoned viands all come together in a fresh plate that makes you feel like you’re relaxing by the sea. Plus, the inclusion of chicken and beef still makes the menu feel familiar to the casual diner.

Value for money

The price for each meal is a fair trade considering each order comes with two sticks of the main dish of your choice and a healthy amount of either side dish.

Final verdict

All the dishes are enjoyable and the ideas of simplicity and health are sure to be appreciated by prospective customers. The decision to go grilled doesn’t totally sacrifice the taste. You won’t get the burst-in-your-mouth flavor, but the freshness is an aftertaste that’s also worth looking forward to.
