Genghis Gang review
October 15, 2018

Customization is the name of the game in Genghis Gang. The

stall, inspired by long-standing Katipunan establishment Sweet Inspirations, serves mongolian bowls made customizable according to what carb, meat, and side you want in your bowl.

Taste

The stall’s fried rice is a standout. Well-cooked rice and mix-ins provide a satisfying and easy-to-eat mouthfeel that does not become as mushy as saucy as rice usually does. Genghis Gang’s well-balanced sauce gives the dish a highly addictive sweet and spicy flavor—the dish never felt onenote, even after several bites. With the sides, the rice felt more balanced. The added sweetness of the corn is a well-received foil to the rice’s overall flavor profile, while the egg’s runny yolk envelops the meal, providing a rich character to the overall dish.

Contrastingly, the meats lacked the depth of flavor of its accompaniments. Perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken still could not stand against the overpowering flavor of the rice. The beef, in particular, was tough and full of sinew, but it provided a more distinct contrast of texture. Despite this, the meats still felt like add-ons to the fried rice rather than an entree by themselves. This led the flavorful rice to become a bit cloying because of the lack of protein.

Concept

The owners wanted to provide quality ingredients for a cheap price in the form of a Mongolian rice bowl, much like the aforementioned Sweet Inspirations. They continue to fulfill this promise by using top-class proteins and condiments that are fresh and full of flavor.

Value for money

Genghis Gang could have been the penny-pinching man’s dream JSEC stall, but ultimately fails. In terms of the meat that comes with the bowl, the dish is imbalanced with the amount of carbs they serve. However, their top-notch ingredients almost make up for the lack of protein as it adds a depth of flavor to their Php 99 rice bowls that no cheap substitute can achieve.

Final Verdict

Genghis Gang provides a familiar take on the Mongolian bowl, and does it well. This stall can easily become a favorite for those looking for a simple meal, but not wanting to sacrifice the taste and quality of the food they eat. With a couple of changes in regard to their protein proportions, this stall can be a major success.
