Metro Manila Film Festival 2020 Reviews

It’s no secret that the global film industry has been upended because of the pandemic. What more for local cinema? Moviehouses and film studios have operated in limited capacities, while avid viewers have turned to online streaming services as a temporary relief for their in-house moviegoing experiences. Despite these changes, the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) pushed through for the first time in an all-digital and internationally-available platform.

Available to watch in video-on-demand website Upstream, the films in this year’s MMFF can be streamed from December 25, 2020 to January 7, 2021. The slate featured a dynamic range of stories: From complicated family dramas to an obsessed fangirl and even to thrilling horror stories. Vantage Magazine brings eight (out of 10) of our picks for this year’s MMFF. Click the movie posters below to read our reviews:

In Frankenstein (2025), his long-gestating adaptation of Mary Shelley’s original text, that generosity becomes both the film’s animating force and […]

Grieving for the living: Five Asian films that explore anticipatory grief

WHEN ILLNESS strikes a family, it rarely affects just one person. Loved ones quietly take on the role of caregivers, trying to stay strong and steady as they hold the household together. This setup, though, may be in contrast to many Asian families, where the diagnosis is often kept secret, out of love and not […]
