Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019 Reviews

When pit against international blockbusters, local films hardly get the screen time they deserve. That’s why the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) is always worth celebrating: These proudly Filipino works have at least a week to themselves in movie houses across the country.

PPP was slated to run for just a week, from September 13 to 19. The good news is that it’s extended up to September 26 for select films and cinemas—which means there’s time to catch this year’s stories about family, friendship, love, and a whole lot more. Vantage Magazine has done the work of reviewing all 10 offerings so that you can spend your well-earned money on the best entries. Click the posters below for a sense of what each flick brings to the table:

In Frankenstein (2025), his long-gestating adaptation of Mary Shelley’s original text, that generosity becomes both the film’s animating force and […]

Grieving for the living: Five Asian films that explore anticipatory grief

WHEN ILLNESS strikes a family, it rarely affects just one person. Loved ones quietly take on the role of caregivers, trying to stay strong and steady as they hold the household together. This setup, though, may be in contrast to many Asian families, where the diagnosis is often kept secret, out of love and not […]
