Favorite (2017) by Ang Bandang Shirley
Since the early 2000s, Ang Bandang Shirley has quietly grown into a local indie institution as it’s gathered fans young and old throughout the years. Favorite, the indie-rock octet’s 2017 release, boasts a collection of bittersweet songs that will surely tug at the heartstrings of its listeners. I’ve been obsessed with their brand of melodic rock ever since hearing their sound in the film Endo (2007). Their catchy pop hooks and simple, but relatable lyrics give them a unique sound that really resonates with me.
A standout track is “Umaapaw,” which celebrates that feeling of comfort and certainty when you’re with the one you love. Another is “Siberia,” which is both the ultimate breakup song and an earnest ode to self-love. For me, this album is the band’s best work yet as they carefully recreate the journey of an intimate relationship with each passing track. Whether you’re just starting to fall in love or have had your heart broken, there’s bound to be a song here for you. – Justin
The Sims 4: Realm of Magic (2019)
If you’re a hardcore Simmer like I am, then you’ve probably already lost your mind over The Sims 4’s latest expansion pack, Realm of Magic, as soon as its trailer came out. Since the pack’s release last September 10, Simmers have been able to explore Glimmerbrook, a quaint town with a mysterious forest pathway through which adventurous Sims are transported to an enchanting new world. Within it, Sims can become the ultimate wizard and learn to cast spells, brew potions, or even duel other Sims! As if that isn’t enough to get anyone into a magical mood, Realm of Magic also includes a wardrobe of celestial outfits and accessories. With these infinite possibilities, you’ll be sure to pull your own disappearing act as you play the day away. – Lyrah
Dear my Dear by Chen
Release: October 1
Chen is back to warm up October with his trademark love songs! Following the artist’s record-breaking solo debut April, and a flower (2019) just last spring, Chen is looking to impress again this fall with Dear my Dear. I’ve always admired the singer, who is known for his extensive three-octave vocal range and powerhouse ballads. More than talent and technique, though, Chen also has the ability to evoke much emotion with his voice. Despite keeping a notoriously low profile, he has successfully made the transition from EXO boy band member to respected solo artist. For those still skeptical about giving K-pop a go, the calming, almost classical, refrains of Chen’s style will surely convince you to lose yourself in the rhythm of the seasons. – Caitlin
Release: October 3
Many are quick to dismiss a superhero movie, especially a DC one, as they tend to have more caricature than depth. It should go without saying, then, that getting a supervillain film right may be even trickier. But the upcoming origin story Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, has surpassed all expectations—even going so far as to win the prestigious Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Hats off to Phoenix for expertly playing the role that the late Heath Ledger made so iconic; after all, those are some big shoes to fill. The Joker is one of the most difficult enemies to have as he has no motive, but to see the world burn. And so far, critical response has been nothing short of wonderful. As an avid horror fan and comic book geek, I’m looking forward to just how great of a psychological thriller Joker is. – Caitlin
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Run: October 11 – 27 in The Theatre at Solaire
Conveniently set to run in October, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tickles the fancy of many theater and suspense fans, myself included. The show celebrates 40 years since its Broadway debut and is now being locally staged as part of Atlantis Theatrical’s 20th anniversary. The production follows the return of a vengeful Sweeney Todd and his meeting with Mrs. Lovett, a struggling pie shop owner. Things take a dark turn as carnage ravages Fleet Street. Add in rock icon Jett Pangan and esteemed actress Lea Salonga playing the lead roles, plus costumes designed by top Philippine designer Rajo Laurel, and you’re sure to get your money’s worth. Given all these, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is definitely set to keep you at the edge of your seat in constant thrill and delight. – Lyrah
Pony by Rex Orange County
Release: October 25
With songs such as “Loving is Easy” (2017) and “Sunflower” (2017), Alex O’Connor—better known as Rex Orange County—has cemented himself into the playlists of almost all of my friends. His songs talk about confused emotions and the highs and lows of young love—all of which hit listeners in the right places. His stripped-down melodies complement these resonant lyrics along with his catchy, trademark blend of pop, jazz, indie, and hip-hop. If his recent single “10/10” (2019) is any indication, then this album is set to be an absolute gem of a record that even more people will enjoy. I’m really excited because you can never go wrong with more Rex Orange County. – Justin
